On internet every server is assigned a unique number that is IP (Internet Protocol).
This number can be related to your telephone number which allows the computers to find and access the files. This IP address is of 4 bytes (32 bits). Each byte is known as octet and it’s written in the form of 123.854.87.3.
Four billion unique addresses can be allowed through this IP addresses but practice of actual number is very less. IP addresses are limited because they are reserved for certain ranges. By using shared hosting or virtual servers these web sites can get around these limitations.
Share hosting helps in allowing the server site to be hosted on the same server instead of using one server for each web site. The introduction of version 6 of IP has 128 bits which provides unlimited number of unique addresses but it takes several years to implement.
The limited IP addresses can be solved by shared hosting but then it also needs IP address to each of the computer that connects to the internet to browse web or even to send a mail. It is best to use ‘dynamic addresses’ where each computer can be connected to the internet through DSL modem.

Most people connect to internet using dynamic IP addresses which is why it is difficult to host a web site from home. Your computer needs to operate server software and also it needs high speed internet connection. It is probably not possible in home because of the slow connection when compared to the speed available in other places such as the hosting companies.
